
Metabolic Health: The Foundation of Healthspan
Metabolic health is often reduced to weight, blood sugar, or whether someone has diabetes. In reality, it describes a much broader physiological state: how effectively the body regulates glucose, insulin, lipids, blood pressure, energy production, and body composition.
A person can maintain a "normal" body weight and still have metabolic dysfunction. Conversely, body weight alone cannot determine metabolic health. This is why a more comprehensive evaluation matters.
What Is Metabolic Health?
At its core, metabolism is the collection of biological processes that convert nutrients into energy and provide the resources necessary for cellular function, repair, and adaptation. Metabolic health reflects how effectively those systems are working.
Common markers used to evaluate metabolic health include fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure, waist circumference, and other measures of glucose and lipid metabolism. Depending on the individual, clinicians may also evaluate insulin, body composition, inflammatory markers, liver function, and additional cardiometabolic biomarkers.
Metabolic dysfunction often exists along a continuum. Insulin resistance, for example, can develop before fasting glucose or hemoglobin A1c reaches the diagnostic threshold for diabetes.
That distinction is important. Preventive and performance medicine aren't simply concerned with whether someone currently meets the criteria for disease. The larger question is:
What direction is their physiology moving?
Muscle Is Metabolically Important
Skeletal muscle does considerably more than generate movement. It is a major site of glucose disposal and plays an important role in insulin sensitivity and metabolic regulation. Maintaining muscle mass and function becomes increasingly important with age, as individuals become more susceptible to sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength.
This is one reason resistance training, adequate nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and recovery are important components of metabolic health.

Body composition can therefore provide information that body weight and BMI alone cannot. Two people weighing exactly the same amount may have substantially different proportions of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, and very different metabolic profiles.
Metabolic Health and Cardiovascular Risk Are Connected
Metabolic and cardiovascular health should not be viewed as separate systems. Insulin resistance, hypertension, abnormal lipid profiles, excess visceral adiposity, physical inactivity, and impaired glucose regulation can cluster together and contribute to cardiovascular risk.
This is why metabolic optimization should not focus on a single biomarker. The objective is to understand the interaction between multiple systems and identify modifiable factors that may influence long-term health.
From Disease Prevention to Performance
Metabolic health also affects how we function today. Energy availability, exercise tolerance, recovery, body composition, sleep, and nutritional status can influence physical and cognitive performance.
For someone interested in longevity, the goal should extend beyond simply avoiding disease. We want to preserve the physiological capacity required to remain active, independent, resilient, and capable as we age.
That requires measurement.
